Self-isolating workers must not be penalised – Anderson

Sinn Fein Foyle MLA Martina Anderson

WORKERS concerned about Coronavirus must be given the option and support to self-isolate without being penalised, Sinn Féin’s Martina Anderson has said.

The Foyle Assembly member also called for employers to ensure that social distancing is facilitated on their premises.

Said Martina Anderson: “Many workers have already been in touch with my office concerned about what happens if they feel the need to self isolate in the face of the Coronavirus pandemic.

“They want to know what support will be available to them in terms of pay and other entitlements.

“The fact is that workers should be supported, not penalised, for taking the decision to self-isolate in the best interest of themselves, their families and colleagues.

“Social distancing must also be facilitated in the workplace. Whether this is achieved by amending physical layouts, shift patterns or other measures, every effort must be made to help halt the spread of Coronavirus.

“We are in the midst of a global pandemic which has created a health crisis that has not been seen in living memory. It requires cautious and prudent action by us all.

“I would also urge anyone who has been potentially exposed to the virus or is showing any symptoms, to immediately self-isolate.”
