SDLP MLA Mark H Durkan has welcomed Derry City and Strabane District Council Planning Committee’s approval to demolish the former Poundstretchers building on Bishop Street to make way for a new family justice centre ‘One Safe Place’ for Foyle Women’s Aid.

Said the Foyle MLA: “I am pleased that approval has been granted for this much needed Women’s Aid Centre ‘One Safe Place in the Bishop Street area of the city.

“It’s great to finally see this derelict building re-purposed to provide an essential refuge for victims of domestic abuse and their families.

“The proposed development for this centrally located family justice centre comprises a public drop in centre, shared café and supported living areas.

“The provision of such a vital hub allowing for assisted living and support services all under one roof will undoubtedly be a welcome addition to the local community.”
