THE SDLP has selected Sean Mooney to fill the vacancy on Derry City and Strabane District Council following Sinead McLaughlin’s move to the Northern Ireland Assembly.

Speaking after the selection convention in the city on Sunday evening, SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood said:

“The SDLP’s team in Derry is continuing to grow and I’m delighted that Sean will be our new councillor for the Waterside.

“Sean has great connections with the local community as an athletics coach and a member of the Board of Governors at Long Tower Primary School.

“I know that he will put his talents as a former solicitor to good use as an advocate for people across our city on the council.

“The SDLP is focussed on growing in Derry and attracting new talented people to our team. Sean’s selection is a signal of our ambition for the city.”

Newly selected Cllr Mooney said: “It’s a great honour to be taking up the role of SDLP Cllr for the Waterside.

“I’m looking forward to delivering on the needs of local people with our MP Colum Eastwood, our MLAs Sinead MlcLaughlin and Mark H Durkan and my council colleagues.

“People in Derry deserve delivery. It’s time that politics and politicians worked for them.

“I’ll be working hard with our entire team to deliver more for the people we represent.”
