Magee campus at the Ulster University in Derry

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood has said that the case for the medical school at Magee campus in Derry can no longer be ignored.

The Foyle MP was responding to Dr Tom Black, Chair of the BMA, who advised the Stormont Health Committee that the medical school at Magee must be “urgently actioned.”

Said Mr Eastwood: “I welcome the call from Dr Tom Black who shares my view that a medical school at Magee must be urgently actioned to tackle the significant workforce challenges for the health service.

“Dr Black highlighted the Gardner Review which made the case for increased medical school places in the North, to improve waiting times and health outcomes for patients.”

“I warmly welcomed the ring-fenced funding for the medical school in the New Decade, New Approach document.

“This was a key priority for the SDLP in the recent talks period and we were delighted to have secured the ringfenced funding commitment.

“The case for a medical school, and increased student places, at Magee is clear.

“Now it’s time to get it done.”
