Magee Campus in Derry

SDLP Health Spokesperson Mark H Durkan has welcomed an announcement from Secretary of State Julian Smith that £60 million will be ring-fenced toward Magee medical school – £45 million of which has already been committed through the Inclusive Investment Fund.

Said the Foyle MLA: “This cash injection commitment for Magee Medical School is of course positive news but long overdue.

“Myself and many others have been championing the call for this crucial provision in the North West for many years.

“The multitude of benefits, which I outlined almost four years ago in Stormont, have not changed.

“This move is key to economic regeneration of the region, alleviating pressures on our health service and stemming the brain drain here- to name but a few.

“With so many positive outcomes for a relatively small stake, the Executive must do all in their power to make a Medical School for Magee a reality.

“It’s time for delivery for Derry,” added Mr Durkan.
