Derry councillor and young family cheat injury in city centre bottle attack

DUP Derry councillor Graham Warke

A DUP councillor says he and his young family narrowly escaped injury when they were attacked on a night out in Derry.

The Irish News reports that Derry City and Strabane District Council member Graham Warke said he had just left the city’s annual pantomime at the Millennium Forum with his four young children when a bottle was thrown at them from the city’s walls last Saturday night.

Mr Warke said: “On the way home after the show we got a picture of the kids at the Derry Girls’ mural and some rocket decides to throw a bottle at us from Derry Walls, nearly hitting the children and glass going over everyone.”

The DUP councillor said he was “angry and disappointed” but relieved that no-one was seriously injured.

He said the bottle broke just inches from his family, scattering glass over his legs and striking his partner’s hand. Mr Warke told The Irish News that he did not know if the attack was random or if someone recognised him as being a council member.

“This is extremely dangerous and reckless behaviour. I want to live in a city where you feel safe,” he said.

The Derry councillor said the issue of young people drinking on the city walls has come up in the past. He said the issue must be addressed.

“Londonderry ow whatever you want to call this place doesn’t matter. It’s a place we all call home and love.

“We want it to be a place where our children feel safe and live,” Mr Warke said.

A PSNI spokesman said the incident was reported to police shortly before 9pm on Saturday.

He added that a number of youths ran off when police arrived at the scene.
