The deadly New IRA mortar bomb found in Strabane on Saturday, September 7

A 28-year-old man has been charged in connection with the discovery of a deadly mortar device in Strabane’s Church View.

He is charged with perverting the course of justice, assisting offenders and recording information of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing an act of terrorism.

The device was found near houses on Saturday, September 7.

He is due to appear at Derry Magistrates’ Court this morning, Friday, November 29, for a first remand hearing.

Police believe the ‘New IRA’ planned to fire the mortar device into nearby Strabane police station.

In follow up searches in Derry’s Creggan, police uncovered a bomb inside a Citroen Xsarao car.

Senior police said the device was fitted with a command wire and believe it was to be used in an attack on a passing police patrol.
