Eastwood backs pension justice for WASPI women

SDLP leader Colum Eastwood

FOYLE Westminster candidate Colum Eastwood has paid tribute to the Women Against State Pension Increase (WASPI) campaign for “their tireless efforts in pursuit of pension justice and equality”.

Ahead of the SDLP manifesto launch, Mr Eastwood confirms that the SDLP support since 2011 for the campaign will continue under his watch at Westminster if elected.

Mr Eastwood said: “The accelerated hike in the state pension age hasn’t delivered equality – instead only hardship and suffering for thousands of women here who have been denied access to their state pension on time.

“The SDLP voted against this injustice in Westminster, when others chose to punish pensioners – we stood up for fairness.

“Since then we have stood by the WASPI women in their tireless efforts in pursuit of pension justice and equality.

“These women have been denied timely access to their state pension, have been left with delayed retirement pots and have been forced to find jobs in later life – due to the broken promises of the Westminster Government.

“Only a vote for the SDLP can ensure that the WASPI women across Derry – and the rest of the North, will have a voice and a vote for their pension payments to be restored through adequate compensation. Every vote will count.

“Stand with the WASPI women, stand up for pension justice, stand for dignity in retirement and vote SDLP December 12th.”
