The scene of deveastation on Derry s Northland Road after one vehicle crash

POLICE have arrested a man and woman arrested after after a crash on Derry’s Northland Road in the early hours of this morning, Saturday, September 28.

PSNI Foyle say officers received a report of the crashed vehicle at around 5.35 am.

As part of follow up inquiries, two people, a 41-year-old ma,an, a 39-year-old female, were arrested on suspicion of driving offences.

They have been taken to Strand Road police station where they remain in custody for questioning.

SDLP Councillor for Foyleside Shauna Cusack says she was shocked at the destruction caused by the crash.

Said Cllr Cusack: “I understand the crash, which occurred at the junction of Springtown and Northland Road in the early hours, involved only one vehicle.

“Considerable damage was caused to a BT cabinet, the safety railings and a residents fence.

“Having spoken to the PSNI they are currently investigating the circumstances but have suggested this may not be ‘death drivers’ but another form of dangerous driving.

“There has been no confirmation that the car was stolen as yet.

SDLP’s Shauna Cusack left shock over devastation at crash scene

“No casualties have been reported as those involved fled the scene.

“This is a very concerning situation.

“I dread to think what could have happened had the railings and cabinet not slowed and halted this vehicle before contact with someone’s home or had there been pedestrians walking in the area.

“They were obviously driving at an intense speed without care and attention.

“I would appeal to anyone with information to come forward and those involved to own up and seek medical attention as they could be seriously injured themselves.

“The the damage to the BT cabinet may affect landlines in the area and BT are working on this,” she added.
