SDLP calls on Derry public to support Climate Action events

SDLP Councillor Mary Durkan

SDLP Cllr Mary Durkan is urging the people of Derry to come out and support two key local events during a week of global climate action: the Youth/ Schools Climate Strike on Friday 20 September and the “Our Earth Our Future March, Rally and Gathering” on Saturday, September 21, 2019.

The Foyleside Cllr said: “The gravity of climate emergency cannot be overstated. The IPCC report in October 2018 confirmed that our planet is under grave threat, and we are reminded of this on a daily basis.

“The Amazon rainforests, our planet’s lungs, are on fire. Across the world people are dying, in ever- increasing numbers, in record temperatures and in extreme poverty.

“Drastic action at all levels is urgently required to tackle global warming. Business as usual cannot be an option. That is why the SDLP and Derry City and Strabane District Council are supporting this crucial strike.

“We live in uncertain times, amidst political chaos- not least with the catastrophic impact of Brexit uncertainty.

“However, regardless of who is in power and where in the world there is political instability, there is no lack of certainty on this issue.

“There is no escaping this climate crisis. Everyone, everywhere, is affected.”

Cllr Durkan praised the ongoing invaluable contribution of local activists and campaigners in engaging and educating the public on various aspects of Climate Emergency, citing the work of Zero Waste North West, Save Our Sperrins, Extinction Rebellion and other groups.

She also commended the leadership of young people in spearheading the Global Climate Strike.

“On the world stage, Greta Thunberg has inspired so many.

“Closer to home, we have been inspired and educated by Derry Girls Jodi Desmond, Rois Hutton and others.

“Let’s stand shoulder to shoulder with our young people.

“Let’s all play our part in protecting our planet for future generations.”

The School Climate strikers are asking people from across the city and beyond to come out and support the Climate Strike in the Guildhall Square at 1 pm on Friday.

The Our Earth Our Future March will leave the Waterside Train Station at 2 pm on Saturday, proceeding along the route of the original civil rights march, for a rally at the Guildhall Square at 3mpm.
