Japanese children’s storytelling event coming to the Tower Museum
‘Sayonara’ will feature stories from the Irish-English language story book of folklore and ghost stories of the same name by Patrick Lafcadio Hearn complimented by music and Kamishibai (paper play).
Junko Okura from the North West Japanese Cultural group explained what people can expect: “Sayonara will transport the audience to the Japanese world of folk tales through visual pictures and narration accompanied by Japanese Taiko drums and music.
“Participants will hear some of the oldest stories of Japanese culture while the sights and sounds create an atmosphere of enchantment that will delight audiences of all ages.
“Admission is free and everyone is welcome, you may even learn some Japanese words.”
The Sayonara story book was released last year by the North West Japanese Cultural Group and features twenty-three Japanese folk stories and ghost stories collected by Irish-Greek writer Patrick Lafcadio Hearn, and includes a selection of essays written by the author and presented in a dual language, Irish-English format.
Sayonara will be held in the Tower Museum at 5.30pm to 6.30pm with each presentation lasting around 20 minutes.
The story telling event is part of the wider Children and Family section of the Culture Night 2019 programme that also includes the Get Creative with Kumon workshop at the Waterside Library where young people are invited to decorate their school stationery with colourful bookmarks, pencil toppers and tiny accessories for their books.
Create your own Master Peace at the Eden Place Arts Centre in Pilot’s Row will allow children to make birds and bees puppets based on sustainable development goals while the In Your Space Youth Troupe Walkabout in Guildhall Square will feature the school’s dynamic and highly skilled Youth Trope on their daily walk along the walls led by their rigorously rigid Ring Master.
Culture Night events are free and suitable for all ages unless otherwise stated and all events are drop in unless pre-booking is stated.
