Eastwood: Scottish court ruling exposes Johnson’s duplicity

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood MLA has welcomed a ruling from the Court of Session in Scotland determining that Boris Johnson’s suspension of Parliament was an unlawful.

Mr Eastwood said that Parliament should be recalled and scrutiny of the British Government’s disastrous no-deal strategy should intensify.

He said: “When the SDLP met with Boris Johnson over the summer we expected the caricature of a politician with no sense of detail to give way to something more substantial.

“Instead our fears that this Prime Minister is nothing more than bluff and bluster were confirmed.

“It is no surprise to us that his short time in government has been marked by chaos.

“Where he has attempted to frustrate the democratic process, the courts have now intervened to force accountability on a Prime Minister whose actions more closely resemble those of a tin-pot dictator.

“The determination in the Court of Session this morning means that Parliament should be recalled and scrutiny of the British Government’s disastrous pursuit of a no-deal Brexit should intensify.

“An election is necessary to dump this Prime Minister and the Tory DUP government that has brought us to the edge of a no-deal disaster.

“The SDLP is ready to play our part and offer people an alternative.”
