North’s MEPs to take part in ‘Countdown to Brexit’ discussion at the Guildhall

Naomi Long congratulated by Sinn Fein’s Martina Anderson MEP and Sinn Fein vice president Michelle O’Neill after being elected as MEP in May this year

WITH just 42 days before the United Kingdom is scheduled to leave the EU, local people will have the chance to hear from Northern Ireland’s three MEPs when they take part in a special Brexit discussion event at the Guildhall.

‘Countdown to Brexit’ is being hosted by the Foyle Women’s Information Network and Derry City and Strabane District Council as part of the wider programme for Culture Night on Friday September 20th.

The discussion with the recently elected MEPs Naomi Long, Martina Anderson and Diane Dodds will be chaired by writer and broadcaster Paul Gosling.

Crucially, the audience will have the opportunity to express their concerns and questions about Brexit in a Q and A session at the end of the discussion.

“The Foyle Women’s Information Network are delighted to be able to welcome all three of our MEPs to the Guildhall for this event,” said event organiser and FWIN representative Dr Maeve O’Brien.

“Just six weeks out from the Brexit deadline of October 31st we know this is a time of great uncertainty for many so this event is an ideal opportunity for anyone with concerns or views about the process to have their voices heard at the highest level and learn more about how they can prepare.

“The North West region has residents on both sides of the border who will be impacted by Brexit and whether or not a withdrawal deal can be agreed between the EU and the UK before the end of October.

“It is particularly apt that all our MEPs are women as although this is an event for everyone there is a particular emphasis on how women may be affected by Brexit.”

The event will take place from 11am to 2.30pm in the Main Hall in the Guildhall with doors opening at 10.30am and a light lunch served from 1pm – 1.30pm.

In the afternoon Advice North West will host an Information and Guidance Session on its free EU Settlement Scheme Service in the Whittaker Suite.

After Brexit EU, EEA and Swiss Citizens living in the UK will need to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to protect the rights they currently have after Brexit – Irish citizens or those with valid indefinite leave do not need to apply.

The full programme for Derry and Strabane Culture Night 2019 will be launched next month.

The eclectic schedule will feature over 50 events when venues across the city and district will throw open their doors and invite you to enjoy an evening of diverse, free entertainment for all ages and interests.

It is brought to you by artists, organisations and venues from our arts and cultural community.

The varied programme will be split into Visual Arts, Music and Dance, Talks and Discussions, Heritage and Museums and Children and Family.
