Maiden City Festival returns this weekend

MAIDEN City Festival fever is returning to Derry this weekend as the city prepares for a week of exciting and enjoyable entertainment for all age groups.

Now in its 21st year, the event will bring the old city to life through music, dance, theatre and pageant.

More than 30,000 people are expected to either see or take part in a wide variety of activities including everything from live music to visual arts.

Festival organisers say the event offers something for everyone and allows the Protestant community in Derry, through festival organisers the Apprentice Boys of Derry, to make a positive contribution to the life of the city.

Free family-friendly events taking place across the city include Siege Tales, a re-enactment of stories and tales from the 1688/89 siege performed daily by local actors on the City Walls, while the Skirl of the Pipes will bring colourful displays of piping, drumming and Highland dancing.

The annual staging of the re-enactment of the relief of the city will take place before the main parade by 150 bands and 8,000 Apprentice Boys.
