SINN Féin MEP Martina Anderson has raised concerns that a ‘no deal’ Brexit will be disastrous for the chemical industry.

Martina Anderson said: “I have received a report from the Royal Society of Chemistry which outlines their very real concerns on the impact a crash out Brexit will have on research and the development of new medications.

“We face the ridiculous situation where even the chemicals used to clean our water supply could be unavailable, alongside access to international networks, funding, equipment and facilities.

“This report has also outlined the difficulties removing freedom of movement will have in attracting and employing professionals and highly trained staff from across the world.

“It is critical that the real impact of Brexit on research and innovation is understood and in the very least mitigated against to ensure that vital research does not become collateral damage.

“The people of the north rejected Brexit and in the result of a crash out, they should be given a choice to remain in the EU in a unity referendum.”
