Actress and Strictly star Jill Halfpenny

DERRY is well known for its warm welcomes and its generosity to visitors to the city.

But one famous lady wants to give the city a “huge hug” after arriving here for the first time.

Jill Halfpenny made her name in the BBC 1 soap Eastenders playing Phil Mitchell’s wife Kate.

And the 43-year-old showed her prowess on the dance floor by winning Strictly Come Dancing.

Jill tweeted today: “1st 5mins in Derry.

“A cab driver offered to keep my case while I wandered round town and then pick me up later to take me to a (link: http://hotel.Now) hotel.

“Now, in a honesty cafe being served tea and toast ,being asked only for a donation. You feel like a huge hug already Derry.”

She later tweeted: “Just been asked if I want my tea topped up! Jesus man. This is delightful.”

Following her tweet, Jill has been encouraged to take part in the walking tour around the city and also pay a visit to the Millennium Forum to “drop in to see the teenagers of Derry in the Millennium Forum’s Youth Production of Legally Blonde too!! I’m sure the cast would love a visit from Paulette Bonafone!” tweeted Lisa Clements.

We did out city proud, Derry!

We hope Jill enjoys the rest of her city in our fabulous city and spreads the word of how great it is!
