SDLP Cllr Mary Durkan has welcomed Derry City and Strabane Council’s endorsement for membership to the Zero Waste Europe Network, making them the first member Council on these islands.

The Foyleside Cllr said: “I am delighted that the Zero Waste Europe membership application has received cross-party backing.

“As the first members on these islands- subject to approval- this membership establishes Derry City and Strabane District Council as climate action leaders within Europe.

“Our council already adopted a Zero Waste/ Circular Economy Strategy and has championed other climate-conscious initiatives in recent years.

“The recent formation of an All-Party Climate Emergency Working Group will also bolster efforts and provide an opportunity for everyone to play their part in tackling responsible waste management.

“Having recently declared a climate emergency, Council recognizes that business as usual is not an option.

“We have seen the devastating impact of waste, particularly plastic, on our environment- the focus towards zero waste must take priority.

“Incorporating sustainable waste management practices brings with it a myriad of benefits, not only for our environment but also our economy.

“We owe it to ratepayers to minimise expenditure on waste disposal so that it can be spent on other important public services.”

Miss Durkan concluded:

“This Zero Waste Europe membership is another step in the right direction, on our road towards zero-waste.

“In the absence of an Assembly, Council must double down on efforts in addressing the climate emergency.

“This crisis affects everyone and as such we all have a duty to act to protect our planet, our communities, our citizens and our economy for future generations.”
