Harkin: Support Workers Rights And Social Justice Week

People Before Profit have called for people to support the programme of events organised by Derry Trades Union Council for Workers’ Rights And Social Justice Week.

People Before Profit Cllr Shaun Harkin said the Seagate workers success in winning trade union recognition is a ‘massive boost’ to workers rights:

“The timing of the DTUC events could not be better. The extraordinary campaign run by Seagate workers shows that not only is trade unionism alive and well in this city, joining a union has never been more important.

“Westminster and Stormont have failed workers for years but trade unions have stood up for fair pay, public services and social justice. That’s why more people are joining trade unions and seeking recognition agreements.

“DTUC should be praised for putting together a brilliant series of events with a clear focus on Palestine and trade union solidarity.

“The Noelene O’Kane Annual Walking Tour will pay tribute to the memory of a long-time education worker and icon of the trade union movement.

“Meetings will also take place on the need for a real living wage and on the crisis in maternity services.

“The highlight of the week will be the annual May Day march on Saturday May 4th which will be a celebration of workers power as well as a protest at the genocide in Gaza.

“People Before Profit are proud to support DTUC in this excellent initiative.”
