Mullan brings high-level delegation to Creggan

SINN Fein’s Karen Mullan has hosted a high-level delegation in Creggan to showcase the positive work in the area and the need for government departments to invest there.

The delegation included the Head of the Civil Service and officials from the Education Authority and the Department of Justice who met with local schools, community groups, the local council and statutory agencies.

The Foyle MLA said: “This visit was an opportunity to showcase the huge amount of good work that goes on to tackle the systemic issues that have affected Creggan and improve the area for all those that live in this vibrant, proud community.

“I felt it was important that officials take the opportunity to hear directly from youth and community workers, Council and local schools about the work they are doing on the ground.

“This community has suffered from high levels of deprivation and has been starved from the meaningful investment needed to bring about long term change and create opportunities.

“It is clear that the structure to tackle this exists through the local growth plan and neighbourhood action plan but we now need to see a parallel approach from government departments to increase investment.

“I will continue press government departments to live up to commitments to people and communities that suffer the worst effects of Tory austerity and years of underinvestment and discrimination.”
