Police appeal to drivers to stop using Derry streets as a ‘dodgems track’

THE PSNI in Derry are appealing for motorists to using the city’s streets as a dodgems style race track.

They have warned that those involved in such activity which endangers the lives of the public will face arrest, prosecution for motoring offences and their vehicles seized.

There have been a number of recent incidents of vehicles being driven dangerously around the streets.

On Friday, two males were arrested for a series of motoring offences and remanded in custody.

Under the heading of ‘Not Barry’s Amusements’, an officer writes today on PSNI Foyle’s Facebook page:

“Ballyarnett Npt are again appealing for people in our area to treat our roads with respect and not as a race or dodgems track.

“It is clearly evident that local people do not want this behaviour on their streets, therefore as a Neighbourhood Team we will not tolerate it.

“We will continue to work closely with the community to identify those involved and the areas affected.

“When located we will take appropriate measures to STOP and speak with those engaged in this activity.

“At this stage do not be surprised if the subject vehicle is seized and those present are prosecuted for various motoring offences.

“As police we try our best each and every day to keep the community safe but we need your help to do this effectively.

“It’s not every night we are in the right place at the right time and simply bump into the offenders.

“Please report all alleged offences and suspicious behaviour to police on 101 or 999 depending on the circumstances.”
