Shauna Cusack has stated that the first item on her agenda is to secure a tribute to all the hard working Derry women past and present by immortalising them on a mural at the City’s gateway.

Cusack said “I’m so proud to be a Derry woman and I understand the true strength, tenacity and courage of all the woman in this City, past and present.

“We have a duty to ensure that their contribution to all of us is recognised. We can and must work to make this happen immediately.

“At the end of last year, I had a meeting with senior Council officers following my motion regarding improving the landscape of our City and District by promoting urban art and local artists.

“While I want exciting creative projects to extend City and District-wide, I presented the idea of using the gable wall at John Street to commission an artwork depicting the Factory woman as a top priority.

“This location would be ideal not only as a welcome to the City but also the historical site of numerous past factories.

“Now that I have been re-elected I have the mandate to continue this vision and will be pushing hard, working with all stakeholders and potential funders to make this happen.

“I’m sure the good people of Derry and Strabane would agree it a fitting legacy is long overdue these wonderful women.”
