Murdered journalist Lyra McKee shot dead in Derry two weeks ago by the New IRA

MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr John Boyle has said he was very ‘touched’ to receive a letter this week from the First Minister of Wales Mark Drakeford offering his deepest sympathies and solidarity with the people of Derry following the death of journalist Lyra McKee.

The Welsh First Minister wrote: “On behalf of the people and Government of Wales, I am writing to offer our deepest sympathies to the community of Derry following the death of journalist Lyra McKee.

“Our thoughts are with Lyra’s family and friends who are understandably angry and heartbroken by this act of terrorism and mindless violence that has no place in society.

“Lyra was a promising journalist whose professional work and personal ethos promoted both reconciliation and equality.

“The display of unity from the people of Derry, their cry of injustice, and the support from the international community, must give us hope that we will see all political parties now working together to reaffirm a commitment to democratic means of resolving differences and the promotion of stability and peace in Northern Ireland.”

Mayor Boyle said: “I was very touched to receive this thoughtful letter from the First Minister of Wales expressing his abhorrence at this mindless act of violence – and solidarity with us following the death of Lyra McKee.

“The shooting of Lyra in our city has not only had a huge impact on the people of Derry but also nationally and internationally.

“She will be remembered as a wonderful person who believed in peace, tolerance and equality – and symbolised all that was good about our society.

“Like so many others, I will remember Lyra as the talented and loving person we all loved, who committed her life to campaigning and writing for a better future!”
