SINN Féin MP Elisha McCallion has said those impacted by the contaminated blood scandal and their families deserve justice.
Speaking as a public inquiry into the scandal got underway, the Foyle MP said: “At least 2,400 people have died as a result of complications from receiving contaminated blood, including people in the north.
“This was one of the biggest scandals ever in the history of the NHS and it is essential that this inquiry gets to the truth of it.
“I have spoken to many people who have been caught up in this scandal, including those who have lost family members and loved ones and I know the deep hurt it has caused.
“I met with Diana Johnson MP, the chair of the all-party group on haemophilia, to discuss the terms of reference and to ensure that those impacted by this scandal in the north were included in the inquiry.
“On the day this inquiry gets underway the British government has made an offer of a subsistence payment to those impacted but there has been no mention of liability or compensation and that this a major concern to those advocating on behalf of victims.
“I will continue to press the British government to ensure victims get the justice they are entitled to,” added the former Mayor of Derry.
