Shantallow man remanded in custody over hijack bid on pregnant woman’s car

Anthony Roberts remanded in custody over attempted hijacking of a pregant woman’s car in Derry yesterday morning

A MAN has faced Derry Magistrates’ Court over a bid to hijack a five months pregnant woman’s with her children inside.

Standing in the dock of the court today, Anthony Roberts, of Drumleck Drive in the Shantallow area, was charged with a total of five offences over the incident which police said happened in the Synge Court area of Ballymagroart in the early hours of Thursday morning, April 25.

The 49-year-old faced charges of attempting to hijack a vehicle, attempting to steal a handbag, driving while unfit, failing to provide a specimen and possessing cannabis.

A bail application was adjourned to allow police to check the suitability of an address.

Roberts was remanded in custody to Maghaberry prison until Monday, May 13.
