Mayor of Derry and Strabane council to attend Lyra McKee funeral

THE MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District Council will be attending the funeral this afternoon in Belfast of murdered journalist Lyra McKee.

The 29-year-old author and writer was shot dead last Thursday night in Creggan by dissident republican terrorists.

A funeral service is being held today in St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast at 1 pm.

She will be laid to rest afterwards in Carnmoney Cemetery, Co Antrim.

Mayor Boyle had a long standing friendship with Lyra having taught her media studies when she was a teenager.

He tweeted today: “It’s with a sad heart that I attend the funeral of murdered journalist Lyra McKee.

“As First Citizen I will bring the prayers and thoughts of the people of Derry.

“You can show solidarity at the Guildhall Square at 1 pm today & sign the Book of Condolence
