SINN Féin Councillor Sharon Duddy has urged people in Derry who have the O Negative (O -) blood type to support the latest appeal from the NI Blood Transfusion Service.

Councillor Duddy is herself O Negative (O -) blood type.

O Negative blood cells are called “universal” meaning they can be transfused to almost any patient in need.

Sharon Duddy said: “Blood donation is very important for the proper delivery of health care.

“Each year thousands of patients require blood transfusions in our hospitals, because they are undergoing surgery, recovering from cancer or have been in a serious accident.

“This week the Blood Transfusion service has put out a special appeal for O Negative (O -) as stocks are running low.

“As someone who is O Negative blood type I would encourage anyone with this type of blood to attend the donation sessions in their area.

“There are a number of sessions in Derry in the next few weeks and it important people go along.

“The need for blood is constant, with hundreds of patients in the north needing transfusions each week.

The next sessions in Derry will take place in the Guildhall:

17th Apr 2019 from 13.30 to 16.00, and 17.15 to 20.00

18 th Apr 2019 from 13.30 to 16.00, and 17.15 to 20.00
