Seenoi-Barr raises concerns over Groarty Primary School closure plans

SDLP Foyleside candidate Lilian Seenoi-Barr

SDLP Foyleside candidate Lilian Seenoi-Barr has voiced concerns over the potential closure of Groarty Integrated Primary School.

Party colleague Foyle MLA Mark H Durkan has written to the Permanent Secretary for Education Derek Baker, appealing for a site visit to meet staff, parents and pupils in an effort to keep the only integrated primary school provision in the West of the city open.

Mrs Seenoi Barr said: “I was very saddened to hear of EA’s recommendation to close Groarty PS.

“I will endeavour to do all that I can, alongside my party colleague Mark H Durkan to ensure that it remains open.

“My concerns are that EA have made no apparent plans to relocate these children, the onus instead has fallen upon the parents.

“The priority of Groarty Primary and it’s amazing staff has always been to meet the needs of the children.

“There are no other primary schools locally who can meet the additional educational needs of many of these children- Ardnashee for example are no longer accepting mildly autistic pupils.

Plans drawn up to close Groarty Integrated Primary School

“Our schools are struggling as it is under the immense pressures of cuts; and will undoubtedly be unable to provide the additional support that many of the pupils from Groarty Primary require.

“It is entirely unacceptable that 32 children will be left to suffer, not having the attention or educational provisions they so desperately need.”
