AS part of Youth 19, Derry City and Strabane District Council in conjunction with the Inner City Trust have launched a special exhibition showcasing the work of local young people aged 12-24.
The Youth 19 Gallery at the Holywell Trust in Bishop Street is providing a platform for young artists to showcase their talents and exhibit their work throughout the year of 2019.
Youth 19 is a year dedicated to young people aged 12-24 where Council are working with young people and partners to promote their voices, needs, priorities and rights, highlighting the positive contributions they make to our community and encouraging them to take a leading role in making change happen.
Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor John Boyle, said the exhibition initiative can have a positive impact on the young people involved.
“The Youth 19 exhibition is an ideal celebration of the creativity and artistic talent that our young people possess.
“The arts can play a key role in promoting positive health and wellbeing for our youth, offering them a platform to share ideas and express themselves while providing them with the opportunity to turn their passion into a career.
“On behalf of Council I’d like to thank the Inner City Trust for offering their time and the gallery space as an in-kind partnership with Youth19.”
Karen McFarland, Director of Health and Communities at DCSDC added: “Youth19 is a year dedicated to promoting the voices, needs, priorities and rights of young people aged between 12-24.
“We are committed to working actively to promote the meaningful engagement and participation of young people within our community.
“The Art Gallery is just one of the projects included in the Youth19 Programme that has been co-designed with young people with events and development opportunities taking place throughout 2019.”
Helen Quigley, Managing Director Inner City Trust, added they were pleased to be collaborating with Council on this project.
“Congratulations to DCSDC for taking the initiative to launch Youth19,” she said. “We are delighted to work with Council and Reach Across on this event. We dearly love to see our young people rightly occupying space in the City Centre.
“Former Chief Executive the late Paddy Doherty was a pioneer for encouraging our young people to engage in positive activities and behaviours.
“DCSDC are committed to working actively to promote the meaningful engagement and participation of young people within our community.”
There are still available spaces within the Art Gallery programme towards the end of 2019, which is open to any young artist between the age of 12 and 24, who wishes to exhibit their work.
