The Foyle Arena has been recognised for its on-going commitment to Disability Sports and Participation, by receiving ISF Excellence Accreditation from Disability Sport NI.

The ISF (Inclusive Sports Facility) Accreditation is awarded to sports facilities which successfully meet the recommendations outlined in Disability Sport NI’s Accessible Sports Facilities Design Guidelines.

Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Foyle Arena is only the second facility in the North of Ireland to receive the excellence award after reaching optimum levels of good practise.

The Mayor, Councillor John Boyle, received the award from Disability Sport NI’s Kevin O’Neill at the Foyle Arena where he congratulated the staff on their work in securing the accreditation.

“I would like to congratulate Leisure Area Manager, Steve Setterfield and all the staff at the Foyle Arena for the development and completion of their Action Plan to make sure this facility is a friendly and accessible experience for users of all abilities,” he said.

“The plan included the creation of a diverse programme of activities for disabled users, amendments to the physical facility, the addition of new equipment, staff training and introducing management policies to promote access.

“This plan is in keeping with our commitment in the Inclusive Strategic Growth Plan for the City and District to promote greater activity by people with a disability, women, girls, older people and those living in areas of high social need,” he said.

The centre continues to work with partners in adding to the diverse programme of activities on offer.
