SDLP Councillor Shauna Cusack

SDLP Councillor Shauna Cusack has warned people to be wary of emails supposedly from the the broadcasting authority stating your TV license is due to be renewed and requesting personal and account details.

Said Cllr Cusack: “Like many people I bank online and pay my tv license monthly via direct debit.

“Just this week I received an email telling me that my license was due to expire and I needed to renew immediately.

“I was naturally suspicious as I have never been contacted like this before and my payment is always continuous.

“While it looked incredibly authentic, when I investigated further the email address, the cost to renew and the license account number they provided were all red flags.

“When I clicked the secondary links on the site none of them worked either.

“I’m sure many people will have received the same and I’m asking them be be extremely cautious.”

Councillor Cusack has advised the public to check the email address on the correspondence.

“In this case it originated in the Far East and had nothing which suggested British Broadcasting Corporation.

“It also did not display any secure network symbol which can be identified with a padlock icon in the address bar.

“If anyone receives similar emails, please ignore and do not enter any details as this is a scam and could leave you seriously ripped off.

“I would also ask you spread the word so friends and family do not fall victim to these fraudsters,’’ she added.
