SDLP Councillor Martin Reilly says he is delighted at the proposed Planning approval for housing at Ballyoan – which contains the much needed and long awaited Caw Roundabout upgrade.

The application is now scheduled to be discussed at a Planning Committee meeting on Monday 25th March with an opinion to approve.

The proposal is for a £100 million development of 780 homes.

Said Councillor Reilly: “The progression of this application towards approval will be greatly welcomed by people living in Waterfoot Park and across the wider Waterside and city region.

“The addition of much needed affordable homes at Ballyoan is good news for a city on the move and will encourage people onto the property ladder.

“However, it is the improvements to Caw Roundabout and the wider road network at this point in the Waterside that will bring a great sense of relief to motorists as it’s local been established that this location is the scene of most traffic accidents in the north west.

“An end is now in sight for those who feel they’re taking their life in their hands as they enter onto this Roundabout at the end of the Foyle Bridge.”

Councillor Reilly added,

“I have been campaigning for the Caw Roundabout to have similar traffic protections, dedicated left turning lanes, improved pedestrian offerings and mechanisms to reduce speed all of which will dramatically improve safety.

“I want to thank the developer and his agents in Turley Associates, the officials in DfI Roads and our local Planning officers who have worked closely since this application was submitted a number of years ago for their endeavours to get us to this stage.

“This Planning approval will represents a ‘Green Light’ in more ways that one and will be of significant benefit to anyone who uses this key piece of northwest infrastructure.”
