Derry police say ‘no excuse’ for using mobile phone while driving

POLICE in Derry have issued a warning about the dangers of using mobile phones while driving.

Their message is simple: there are no excuses for talking or texting on a mobile as it could lead to a serious accident, either killing a motorist or pedestrian or leaving them with life changing injuries.

An officer writing on PSNI Foyle’s Facebook page said: “Listening to Radio Foyle this morning and there were having a discussion about the amount of drivers who drive while using a hand held mobile phone.

“I have issued numerous tickets which carry a fine of £65.00 and 3 points on your driving licence which you must declare to your insurer !!

“The message is still not getting through !

“People are dying because selfish drivers won’t leave their phones alone.

“I’ve heard all the excuses……..

“First time I’ve ever done it”, Police check, no it isn’t !

“Driver: My uncle rang me, he’s sick in hospital.

“Me: Which hospital?

“Driver: Er…..Er……Er……

“Driver: I was listening to a song on my iPod.

“Me: Why did you have your iPod up to your ear when it doesn’t have a speaker?

“Driver: Er…..Er…….

“Please leave the phone alone at all times in the car.

“If it’s in your hand, you are using it.

“If you are checking the time on your phone, you are using it.

“If you are stopped at traffic lights you are still driving, if you lift it you are using it while driving.

“If you are checking social media, you are using it.

“If it’s in your hand you are using it!

“If you carry on ignoring the law, expect to get caught, because it is making people’s blood boil!

“Wise up before it’s too late!”
