FROM March 1-17, communities throughout the island of Ireland and around the globe will be celebrating Seachtain na Gaeilge , the largest Irish language festival in the world.

Seachtain na Gaeilge gives both learners and fluent speakers an opportunity to celebrate the Irish language with an emphasis on community events and the daily use of the language in common settings.

This year events are taking place in Derry and Stratford, starting on March 1st and ending on St Patrick’s Day on March 17th. So, if you are a fluent Irish speaker or speaker there will be plenty of opportunities to talk and celebrate with others in your local community.

Councilor John Boyle, Derry and Derry District Council, said: “Seachtain na Gaeilge gives us a unique opportunity to celebrate the Irish language as part of the linguistic integrity of the area.

“This year, I will be particularly supportive of Lúcháir Leabhar – a unique event organized by Derry City Council and Strathane District for Gaelscoileanna in the area whose purpose is to celebrate World Book Day through Irish.

“We are delighted that Máire Zepf, the first member of Children’s Writing, will be on the day to provide creative storyteller and writing workshops ”

This year’s events program includes: Book Book – the World Book Day’s biggest celebration at City Hall in Derry with Máire Zepf, celebrating International Women’s Day, music sessions, Éigse Cholm Cille at the University of Ulster, family events at Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin, film shows, conversation circles, celebrating the Walls 400 and St Patrick’s Day Pre-Gaeltacht. Strength of opportunities to deal with Irish!

Erin Hamilton, an Irish Language Officer with the Derry City and Strathane District Council, said:

“The Council is delighted to be able to support Seachtain na Gaeilge 2019 and recognize the good work and contribution of local committees, schools and Irish language organizations.

“We hope that Irish language profile will increase this year due to Seachtain na Gaeilge and we are sure that it will reinforce the status of Irish as a language for all “.

The celebration is of great importance this year since UNESCO has recognized 2019 as the Year of Indigenous Languages, so there are increasing opportunities this year to raise awareness and awareness of the importance of regional languages.
