Comedian Ardal O’Hanlon is joining the cast of Derry Girls to play awkward Irish fella Eamonn

HIT comedy Derry Girls has a new fella joining the family.

Celebrated Irish comedian and actor Ardal O’Hanlon (Father Ted) is set to appear in Series 2.

O’Hanlon will make a special guest appearance as Eamonn; the awkward, middle-aged mummy’s boy of the Quinn/McCool extended family.

Series 2 of the award-winning Channel 4 comedy has wrapped filming and will return to screens with 6×30’ new episodes in March 2019.

Fans will have to wait and see what shenanigans the gang get up to, but rest assured, Erin Quinn (Saoirse Monica Jackson), her cousin Orla McCool (Louisa Harland) and friends Clare Devlin (Nicola Coughlan), Michelle Mallon (Jamie-Lee O’Donnell) and Michelle’s tag along English cousin, aka The Wee English Fella, James Maguire (Dylan Llewellyn) will be back, navigating their teens in 1990’s Derry in their hilarious, unique, yet all too familiar fashion.

Derry Girls is the creation of acclaimed Derry-born writer Lisa McGee who has mined her own experiences to create a candid, one-of-a-kind, family-centred comedy set against the backdrop of The Troubles.

Across the UK, consolidated viewing figures revealed that the first series of Derry Girls was watched by an average of 2.5 million viewers, making it Channel 4’s biggest comedy launch since 2004.

Derry Girls is also the biggest ever comedy launch series on All 4.

According to Channel 4, the first series has consolidated (taking account of time-shifted viewing on a television over a seven day period) to become the biggest series ever in Northern Ireland since modern records began in 2002.

Derry Girls Series 2 (6×30’) was commissioned for Channel 4 by Head of Comedy Fiona McDermott and Commissioning Editor Jack Bayles.

The series is written by Lisa McGee. Caroline Leddy, Liz Lewin, Jimmy Mulville and Lisa McGee are Executive Producers.

Derry Girls is a commission for Hat Trick Productions and is a showcase of creative talent from Northern Ireland, entirely set and made locally which received funding from Northern Ireland Screen.

A trailer for series two of Derry Girls was released earlier this week
