SDLP Waterside councillor Martin Reilly

SDLP councillor Martin Reilly has called on the Department of Infrastructure to bring its plans for the local railway network before the council.

Speaking after yesterday’s Environment and Regeneration Committee, the Chairman of the SDLP grouping on Derry City and Strabane District Council said:

“The Council regularly hears from DfI Roads division on their future plans and maintenance routines for the city and district.

“So yesterday I proposed that we also invite in the relevant officials from the Department for Infrastructure to outline their plans for investment in the rail services for people in the northwest.

“Recent years have seen much needed investment in the line itself and improvement in the timetable but much more is needed for our city to have the rail options that the people of the northwest deserve.”

The Waterside councillor added: “The SDLP want to see not only better rail connections to Dublin on the existing Belfast route but also future development of the line here to serve other places across the northwest.

“There was unanimous support across the Chamber for DfI to be invited before the Committee as an opportunity for them to outline what they intend to do to meet the growing demand for rail here.

“I look forward to hearing from the Department in due course.”
