Tierney welcomes plans for new 263 homes to be built in Skeoge area

SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney has welcomed the decision by Derry City and Strabane District Council Council’s planning committee to approve 263 social homes for the Skeoge area.

Councillor Tierney said: “There is a urgent need for social housing in this area of Derry and this latest decision will go a long way to address the current demand and help many applicants get off the housing waiting list.

“The demand for housing in this area is at an all-time high and we see many families coming to our office on a daily basis looking for help and support, yet due to the housing shortages we often struggle to meet this need.

“We have seen housing associations build a new community at Skeoge over recent years and that is a welcome development but we also now need to see proper community infrastructure to complement this.

“The SDLP have been working with our community partners to establish the different needs within the community and facilities that could help develop the area further.

“We will continue to liaise with housing associations to ensure the appropriate provisions are identified and agreed for any further plans.”
