A PEACE rally will be staged in Derry city centre today, Friday, January 25, following last weekend’s bomb attack and subsequent hoax bomb alerts on Monday of this week.

The rally is being organised by the public service union NIPSA.

It will take place at the Peace Park next to The Guildhall at 1 pm in a bid to give people the chance to voice their opposition to the paramilitary activity believed to the work of the New IRA.

Last Saturday night, masked men hijacked a car belonging to a pizza delivery driver in Derry city centre.

A crude improvised explosive device was put in the vehicle and a man drove it to Bishop Street where it exploded a short time later outside the local courthouse.

On Monday, a Housing Executive contractor’s van and a Royal Mail van were hijacked in Creggan forcing police to evacuate people from their homes.

Late on Monday night an Asda delivery van was hijacked and abandoned on Northland Road close to St Mary’s College sparking security alerts.

All three vehicles were examined and found to be hoaxes.

There was also an attempt to hijack a bus on Monday night at Moss Road in Galliagh.

On Wednesday night, police said it recovered a suspected firearm during searches in the Brandywell.

Following an examination by the ATO, the suspected gun has been taken away for forensic and ballistic examination.

In a statement, NIPDS said: “In the wake of Saturday’s bombing at the courthouse in Derry, and subsequent paramilitary and police activity in the city, public sector union NIPSA – which represents staff at the courthouse – has initiated a protest in opposition to paramilitarism, sectarianism and repression under the slogan ‘No going back!’

“The rally is to take place today, Friday, January 25, at 1pm in the Peace Garden.

“The protest has been backed by Derry Trades Union Council and the ICTU.”
