DETECTIVES investigating Saturday night’s explosion outside Bishop Street courthouse in Derry have released four men from custody

The men – two aged in their 20s and two aged 34 and 42 – were arrested in the city on Sunday under section 41 of the Terrorism Act.

All four men were taken to the serious crime custody suite at Musgrave PSNI station in Belfast.

Police tonight say the four have been released unconditionally.

Anyone arrested under the Terrorism Act cannot be released on bail. They are either released unconditionally or charged to court.

A fifth man, aged 50, who was arrested on Monday over the bombing, remains in custody.

He is also being questioned over a robbery of a substantial amount of cash from a van driver at Meadowbank Avenue in the city last Tuesday.

Bishop Street was re-opened to the public and traffic on Monday evening after forensic teams concluded their examination of the scene.

The remnants of the hijacked car has been taken away for further forensic examination.

During the alert, residents and guests and staff at a local hotel had to be evacuated on Saturday night when police received information to clear the area around the courthouse.

A car hijacked from a pizza delivery driver in the city was left at the courthouse a bomb on board exploded.

The bombing was widely condemned and a senior police officer described the attack at Derry’s courthouse as “reckless”.

PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Mark Hamilton said: “This attack was unbelievably reckless.

“Thankfully the attackers failed to kill or injure any members the local community out socialising and enjoying the best of what the city has to offer.

“The people responsible for this attack have shown no regard for the community or local businesses.

“They care little about the damage to the area and the disruption they have caused.”
