SINN Féin Councillor Sharon Duddy has called for innovative speed limit signage on Derry’s Lonemoor Road.
It follows complaints from local residents that some drivers are using road like a race track with cars hitting speeds at up to 70 mph.
Said Cllr Duddy: “In recent years Sinn Féin have been heavily lobbying Transport NI to look at introducing a number of speed limit signs and associated safety measures along a half a mile section of the Lonemoor Road from its junction at the top of the Brandywell Road to the junction at the top of Westland Street.
“It is very apparent that the majority of vehicles travelling along this road are doing so well in excess of the 30mph speed limit.
“Residents who have raised this issue with me have said at night time the speed of the cars travelling along this road is frightening with some travelling at 60-70 mph and resembling a racetrack.
“A number of measures have taken place along the road with the installation of traffic islands and a pedestrian crossing at the top of Stanley’s Walk but motorists are still driving far too fast.
“In an effort to remind drivers particularly of the speed limit at night time I am calling for an illuminated electronic speed reminder to be installed on the broad footpath outside Celtic Park.
“There are currently no speed limit signs along this stretch of road.
“It must also be remembered that along this road we have the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium, Celtic Park, the City Cemetery, three main link roads to Creggan, two link roads to the Bogside and Brandywell, Bligh’s Lane with three schools, a shopping centre and an industrial estate,” added Cllr Duddy.
