Martin as so many visitors to Derry saw him

MAYOR of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Councillor John Boyle, will officially unveil a memorial plaque in memory of the late tour guide Martin McCrossan today, Friday, October 26th at 2.30 pm.

The plaque has been installed on top of a plinth type structure and will be located outside the top entrance of Foyleside Shopping Centre alongside the existing street furniture where Orchard Street and Bridge Street meet.

Mayor Boyle said he was honoured to be able to open a permanent tribute to Mr McCrossan in the heart of the city centre.

“This memorial is a permanent tribute to a great ambassador for our city Martin McCrossan and the tireless work he did in promoting our area to tourists from all over the world,” he said.

“Martin’s work with his award winning company Derry City Tours meant he was one of the most recognisable faces in the city which rightly earned him the title ‘Mr Derry’.

“It is fitting that it is located in an area of the city that is synonymous with Martin and the point from where his tours started for tens of thousands of visitors.

The memorial plaque will read Martin McCrossan Tourism Hero 1962-2015 and include a photograph that will be etched into the plaque.

It will also include a written tribute as follows: “A true champion and ambassador for the City.

“The driving force behind the tourism industry who left a lasting positive impression on everyone who met him.”
