POLICE are hunting the thugs who stole a car and then set it on fire at the weekend in Derry.

The red Ford Fiesta was taken from O’Connor Court in Ballymagroarty area of the city before it was crashed and gutted in the Bogside.

The vehicle was stolen on Sunday evening some time between 5 pm – 11.30 pm and then crashed at pedestrian crossing on Lecky Road.

It was then deliberately set on and fire and the car thieves then fled the scene.

The car was then set on fire and those responsible fled from the scene.

A police spokesperson said:

“Enquiries are continuing and officers would ask anyone with any information to contact them at Strand Road on 101 quoting reference number 31 01/10/18.”

Sinn Féin Councillor Sharon Duddy has condemned those behind the incident.

“I was contacted by a number of people to say a burned out car was blocking the carriageway on Rossville as you come off the Flyover.

“I contacted CRJ who told me they would make arrangements to get the car removed as soon as possible.”
