BARD Theatre Group are returning to the Alley Theatre in Strabane at 8pm on 12th-13th October to proudly present ‘Silence’ – a new three-act play by Andrew William Tinney from an original script set in 1718.
After the success of the group’s first ever performance ‘The Coarse Acting Show’ Bard are returning with a new drama that will debut in the Alley before touring the circuit as part of the Irish Drama Festivals.
‘Silence’ tells the story of Ireland in the 1700’s when the first migrants left for America. It follows Lucy, born a mute, her family and the people who shape their society.
Lucy cannot speak. She could never speak, not since birth… And though Lucy’s life was spent in silence, she could hear. She could hear everything everyone said, even the words they said behind her back. Words like ‘devil child!’
‘Silence’ is a tale of the harrowing brutality of humanity, the exploitation of religion and the tragedy that so often accompanies love.
Bard utilise theatrical storytelling – using movement, multi-role actors and fast paced-action – to present ‘Silence’.
The audience can expect laughter and shock, scenes of joy and scenes without hope. The group’s aim is to present humanity as it is, bare bones and thought-provoking!
As the characters repeat throughout the play – “This is not a happy tale” – but it is nevertheless an important one which Bard feel is worth telling of some of the people from Ireland who sought to escape the suffocating Penal Laws.
“There were others too who longed for escape for other reasons – to flee their personal sufferings and the ‘silence’ that dominated their lives.
