THE partnership team involved in securing a major regeneration project for Abercorn Road has welcomed the recent announcement by The Executive Office’s Urban Villages initiative to award almost half a million pounds towards a scheme which will see the upgrade and improvement to commercial and residential properties along the street.
The project, which has been designed by a partnership project team consisting of Triax Neighbourhood Partnership Board, City Centre Initiative, Derry City & Strabane District Council and Urban Villages will shortly commence work with the aim of improving the overall appearance and presentation of Abercorn Road.
Commercial properties along the street will be eligible to receive funding support towards a range of interventions to include new shopfronts, façade painting, signage and removal of external shutters where applicable. Residential properties will also benefit from funding support in the form of painting to their external facades.
Welcoming the investment to the area, Charles Lamberton, Manager of Triax Neighbourhood Partnership said: “We are delighted to be part of this exciting development which will revitalise and reimage a vital gateway route into the wider Triax area.
“This programme will be a great benefit to residents and business owners as it will enhance the appearance of the area and attract new business and customers”
Linsey Farrell, Programme Director, of the Urban Villages Initiative, commented: “Through the Urban Villages Initiative, The Executive Office is investing almost £500,000 in the Abercorn Road regeneration project.
“We are delighted to support this project which will transform the physical appearance of this area for businesses and residents at this important gateway to the City.
“The Urban Villages Initiative is committed to investing in Derry~Londonderry and the Abercorn Road project will help us achieve our key aim of improving the physical environment in this local Urban Village area”
In recognising the importance of the project to the area and wider City Centre, Chief Executive of City Centre Initiative, Jim Roddy said: “CCI are delighted to be involved in this scheme and to assist Council with the delivery of the project.
“The regeneration of Abercorn Road will undoubtedly achieve what the Urban Villages Initiative is all about – the betterment of good relations and physical regeneration.
“Abercorn Road is one of the gateways to our city centre and a route many visitors to the city and residents use to enter and exit the city centre.
“This scheme will be very significant for the area and the wider city centre as a whole and we look forward to working with residents, commercial properties and the project partners over the coming months to bring this to full realisation.”
Council’s Chair of Environment & Regeneration Committee, Cllr Martin Reilly also welcomed the project by stating:
“The investment will make a significant and positive impact on the appearance of Abercorn Road and I congratulate the partnership team in securing this initiative for the area.”
The partnership team involved in the delivery of the project are currently liaising with the commercial and residential property owners along Abercorn Road in terms of confirming their participation in the scheme and agreeing the proposed works to each of the properties.
The works will be undertaken by contractors appointed by Council to be completed by the end of March 2019.
A public information meeting for residential property owners along Abercorn Road, will take place this Wednesday, September 19, at 7 pm upstairs in the Abercorn Bar.
