THE North West Greenway team is encouraging Strabane residents to get on their bikes on Wednesday August 15, to celebrate and promote active travel during Cycle to Work Day.
As part of the day’s events, the North West Greenway Network team will have a presence in the Alley Theatre from 12.00pm-3.00pm.
Active Travel Officer, Emma Hagger, will be there to give out freebies, offer cycling advice and test people’s knowledge on the North West Greenway Network Plan.
With a new dedicated cycle path planned to link Strabane to Lifford, Greenway Programme manager, Jonathan Henderson, said:
“Active travel is a very important element of our plan and it is great that Emma will be available in the Alley Theatre to help people find out about cycling in Strabane, and over to Lifford too! Emma is also hopeful that people will come along to find out more about the programme.”
Speaking ahead of Cycle to Work Day, Emma Hagger said the event would appeal to cyclists of all abilities.
“Whether you are an experienced cyclist, just getting started or thinking about returning to the saddle, Cycle to Work Day is a great opportunity to express your support for getting about the town without using a car.
“And there will be prizes for those with fantastic cycling knowledge! Anyone who wishes to pledge their miles for Cycle to Work Day and celebrate saddle travel can log onto www.cycletoworkday.org.”
The Strabane to Lifford section is one of three routes being developed as part of the North West Greenway Network, along with Derry to Buncrana and Derry to Muff.
On completion, the three routes will comprise 46.5 km of new cross-border greenway that will help reduce carbon emissions by encouraging commuters to leave their cars at home.
The c.€18 million project is part-funded under the EU’s INTERREG VA Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).
