Karen Bradley with DUP politicians during visit to Fountain estate

SECRETARY of State Karen Bradley has been visiting Derry today to meet residents of the both the Bogside and the Fountain areas

In the Fountain estate, Ms Bradley was told by residents of their fears of further sectarian attacks.

The asked for the security fence to be raised to protect them from further attacks ahead of the Siege of Derry celebration on August 12th – one of the biggest annual events in loyalist culture in the city.

The estate was attacked by republican youths in the lead up to the Twelfth of July, with petrol bombs thrown into the estate.

Alexander House, which is home to elderly people and vulnerable adults, was attacked with petrol bombs.

The Secretary of State also met with residents of the Bogside and senior police chiefs in the city.

The NIO said she “welcomed the opportunity to meet residents and community workers from the Bogside Partnership Board to discuss the impact recent disorder had on their community, as well as other sensitive issues affecting residents”.

Mrs is also due to meet council chiefs about the potential of securing extra investment through the City Deal.

Last week Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond visited Derry and urged it to apply for a city deal.
