TRANSLINK will be laying on special bus and coach services from Derry for those making the journey south to see Pope Francis next month.

The company will be working alongside Ireland’s National Transport Authority to meet demand for the event, with tens of thousands expected to make the journey to Dublin.

The Pope’s visit will take place over two days on Saturday, August 25 and Sunday, August 26.

The Pontiff will make a speech at the World Meeting of Families in Dublin’s Croke Park on the Saturday, followed by Mass in Phoenix Park the following day.

Bus specials will be run across both days by Translink, with additional services being laid on from Derry, Belfast, Banbridge and Newry for the Saturday.

On the Sunday, as well as these destinations, additional services will run from Limavady, Dungiven, Magherafelt, Larne, Dungannon and Downpatrick.

Additional rail services will also run across both days, with the final departure on the Dublin to Belfast Enterprise service on the Sunday pushed back to a 9.10pm departure time from Dublin Connolly station.

It has been announced free travel will be available on all public transport across Dublin during the visit, with gardai encouraging people to leave their cars at home when travelling to see the pontiff.

A full list of special services is available on the designated area of Translink’s website.
