POLICE are investigating after a family pet dog was mauled in a children’s play park in Derry.

Four year old Shitzuu Ozzy was attacked by two Staffordshire bull terriers while out for an evening stroll with his owner Marie Doherty from Creggan.

The pet was later taken to a local vet where staff are valiantly trying to save Ozzy’s life.

Tragically, Ozzy lost a leg following the vicious attack.

Armed police were called along with a local dog warden in a bid to resolve the situation.

PSNI Foyle say: “Officers were called to Bishops Field / Iniscarn play park, Creggan on Thursday evening at approximately 18:45, following a report of an incident involving dogs.

“Due to the nature of the incident a number of Police were dispatched to ensure public safety.

“Thankfully, the situation was resolved with the co-operation and assistance of the Dog warden.

“Thank you to all residents that moved back when requested by Police, to ensure a safe resolution.”
