Three juveniles and a man appear in court charged over last week’s rioting

A 22-year-old Ballymagroarty man has faced Derry Magistrates’ Court charged with offences surrounding last week’s violence in the Bogside.

Scores of people rioted for six nights, with automatic shots fired and along dozens of petrol bombs and a number of blast bombs.

Senior police officers blamed the violent dissident republican group the ‘New IRA’ for orchestrating the violence.

He was further charged with:

* making, possessing and throwing petrol bombs and riotous behaviour
* indecently exposing himself to a female police officer.
* damaging a monitoring tag, belonging to G4S and with obstructing a police officer on 26 June.

The offences are alleged to have committed between July 12 and July 13.

He was remanded in custody until Thursday, August 9.

A 17-year-old was remanded in custody to the same date charged with riotous behaviour at Fahan Street on Thursday, July 12 and with possessing and throwing a petrol bomb at police officers on the same date.

He is further charged with possessing, possessing with intent to supply and being concerned in offering to supply cocaine and cannabis.

Also appearing in court was a 15-year-old boy who was remanded into custody charged with destroying a car by arson, possessing and throwing a petrol bomb at the police and riotous behaviour between July 8 and July 9.

A 16-year-old was charged with making and possessing a petrol bomb in the Collon Lane area on July 13.

The juvenile was released on bail until September but is banned from the Bogside or being in a group with more than three people in a public place.

None of the juveniles can be identified as they are under the age of 18.
