Derry petrol bombing incidents attempt to ‘draw police out for attack’

THE PSNI and a councillor say that the petrol bombing of an Apprentice Boys Memorial Hall and family homes in Derry are an attempt to draw police out for attack.

DUP councillor Graham Warke said that the hall and family homes in the Fountain Area were targeted with petrol bombs.

Councillor WaRke said he believed the attacks alongside a security alert in the Lecky Road area were an attempt to draw police out and attack them.

The security alert was later discovered to be a hoax.

The majority of the Fountain area of Derry is made up of members of the unionist community.

The PSNI confirmed three petrol bombs were thrown and they too believed it was an attempt to facilitate an attack on police.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “It is highly likely this was an attempt to draw police into confrontation therefore we would ask parents and those with influence to ensure young people are not getting caught up in activity that only harms our community.

“There will be an increased police presence in the area over the weekend to provide reassurance to the residents and wider community.”
