Fire crews at the scene of the major fire in Creggan on Saturday

AN investigation has been launched in what sparked a “major fire” in Derry on Saturday.

The fire broke out at the former Brickkiln factory on the Heather Road at around 5pm.

Multiple fire appliances and the police attended the scene.

The public were advised to avoid the area.

Police said “rubber neck” motorists had hampered efforts by fire crews to bring water to the site.

Residents had also been urged to shut their windows as plumes of thick black smoke filled the air.
